Attitude of Gratitude

A couple years ago, back in my livejournal days, I posted three things I was grateful for every day during the month of November. It was an idea I got from one of my roommates at the time. I recently read through some of those entries, and I briefly considered doing the same thing on this blog this year. I decided posting every day was a little much (and, let's be honest, I was also worried that I'd lose all five of my Loyal Readers who only come here to see the cute pictures of James).

I do like the idea of pointing out things I'm grateful for, and November is the perfect month for it. I have decided to post five things I'm grateful for every Friday for the month of November (well, who knows, I may enjoy it so much I will continue past November). They can be specific to the week, or just general. And you (my Loyal Readers ;) ) should, too! Each week when I post my five, you should post five of your own in the comments. Then we can all be grateful together! I really hope you decide to join with me, because I'm excited at the prospect of hearing the things you have to say.

Five things I am grateful for this week:

1. The Oregon weather. I know I'll probably get tired of it by the time it's been like this for five months, but right now it is gorgeous. Rainy, cool, and beautiful.

2. Gmail chat. I love that I can keep in touch with people so easily. I can ask Paul a quick question whenever I need to. I can commiserate with Paula about whatever annoying thing our children are doing at the time. I can make exciting plans and brainstorm ideas with Lisa. Oh the joy it brings! :)

3. The democratic process. I have rather successfully avoided talking about controversial topics very much this election, but I am indeed grateful for the freedom that we have in this country and the ability we have to vote on issues and representatives.

4. Rewritable DVDs. Paul and I don't have a DVR or Tivo, so we use rewritable DVDs to watch our tv shows that we can't catch when they are on. It's a beautiful thing.

5. James' laugh. He never fails to brighten my day. Babies can be so annoying ("I swear! I just changed your stinky diaper FIVE MINUTES ago!") sometimes, but that sweet laugh erases all the bad.

Your turn! What are you grateful for this week? (Mom, I think you'd better swallow your fears and finally comment. :) )

I'm thankful for:

1. Sick days when I can stay home all snuggled up in bed watching movies or reading a book. (Not so thankful for the sickness, though.)

2. Bryce doing the dishes. He does them so often and he never complains about it.

3. Books. Deliciously written books, all pretty and just waiting for me to devour them.

4. Having my sister live nearby. What in the world will I do when she moves away?

5. The fact that Chuck is still safe and well.

I'm thankful for:

1. The fact that although I lost my wallet, it did not have as many things in it as I thought. For example, my library card is safe. Also, this is way better than losing such things while abroad. Ugh.

2. Obama in the White House. I get to read things like this: Obama added that while many breeds are hypoallergenic, he would prefer to adopt a dog from a shelter. The problem?

"A lot of shelter dogs are mutts, like me," Obama said. "So whether we're going to be able to balance those two things, I think, is a pressing issue on the Obama household."

Instead of this: "I remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office."

Or this: "Throughout our history, the words of the Declaration have inspired immigrants from around the world to set sail to our shores. These immigrants have helped transform 13 small colonies into a great and growing nation of more than 300 people."

And this: "I'll be long gone before some smart person ever figures out what happened inside this Oval Office."

Yes, yes you will.

3. I'm grateful for the seasons changing, for gold and orange leaves and high speed winds and cool evenings for my runs.

4. Also for living close to family, so that when my tire starts to go flat my dad is close enough to come help me out.

5. And for friends who invite me to get pedicures and eat delicious Italian food. Wednesday was a bad day until Tanya called!

What am I grateful for today?

1. Friends and family who have been so supportive of my time of need with my colon cancer.

2. Prayer and spiritual upliftment I get from reading the Book of Mormon and preparing my SS lessons. I can't believe I missed so much before. But when you have to teach it, it's so much more insightful.

3. A prophet upon the earth who leads and guides us at this time of need.

4. My job which helps me to focus on other things besides my health.

5. My children, when they call and tell me they love me still. It's also nice to have a son at home at age 15 that still tells me he loves me and gives me hugs every day.

Do I have to only list 5 things!!!

6. I gotta sneak in this one..your blog which makes me happy to see my only grandson!

Hi Jennie! Great idea!

Things that I am thankful for:

1) That my younger brother is going to school at CU and that he is coming to my house for dinner on Tuesday.

2) A father who understands that after 15+ years of balancing tennis and schoolwork, it is ok for me to choose schoolwork for the next two months.

3) A mother who is just about the most self-less person on Earth and lets me go on and on about my worries, even when I know she has plenty on her mind.

4) A boyfriend who does not let me worry too much.

5) Kind and caring friends. :-)

Today I'm thankful for:
1. How innocent and beautiful babies are.
2. Our bodies. How amazing they are. I can't believe how quickly they can heal and all the complicated things they can do all at the same time.
3. Nathan's patience with my shortcomings and telling me how much he loves me every day.
4. My slippers that keep my toes warm so they don't freeze and fall off.
5. Having someone to love and care about.

I'm thankful for:

1. Friends who know just how to pick you up when you're having a bad day.

2. Doctors who know so much and can help so many people heal.

3. People who know more than me about so many things and can teach me.

4. Praying for others - it's made a huge difference in my life lately.

5. Families - they're so supportive, and love you no matter what!
